Mercurial

A painting on a round substrate shows a forward-facing fox with its eyes closed, standing on a golden crescent moon. The gold borders the rest of the painting as well. There is a black background behind the fox and the moon, with pointilism dots emanating from the moon and from the fox's feet and forming a flame shape around the fox. The painting is laying flat on a table with paints, glasses and markers laying around it.

Astrologically, Mercury is an interesting character.  Most of us think of Mercury in Retrograde, when we get to blame everything that goes wrong on the trickster and the communicator.

I am not an astrologer, but I get a reading at least once a year and follow along with the moon phases.  I learned from my astrologer that every year a different astrological figure rules your chart--this figure is called a time lord.  I decided to connect more deeply with my time lord each year in some kind of ritualistic way.

One year when Venus--goddess of love--was my time lord, she was in my 12th House, which is a place of shadows.  My astrologer posed this question to me, "What does it look like when Venus is guiding you through the dark?" So I delved deeply into self love and shadow work (to me they are the same) and on every New Moon of the year I went to my local float shop and spend 90 minutes floating in darkness.

I've continued that ritual because it is so nourishing to me.  And the next year when Mercury was my time lord, I worked on developing a deeper relationship with them.  I still send Reiki to Mercury before I write or paint and invite them into my practice.  I signed up for a weekly singing group and a writing workshop.  I'm using my voice in a variety of ways and finding more and more inspiration showing up in my life.

I made and sold this little painting before my Mercury year but I was thinking about the word "Mercurial" when I painted it.  Shapeshifting and transitory and full of magic.  It was a good meditation to prepare me for that year.  I continue to find ways to both use and expand my voice in my art and beyond.

This piece has sold but prints may be in the future <3
